"Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally.” - Jon Kabat-Zinn |
The nature of the mind is to wander, plan, and analyse, which is good to an extent. The mind helps us remember to buy onions for tonight's dinner, decide the most suitable approach to solving that issue at work, and learn how to drive a car. However, when this gets out of hand and we spend too much time dwelling in the past or worrying about the future, it can lead to depression, anxiety, stress, low self-image, hopelessness.
As the old proverb goes: "The mind is a wonderful servant but a terrible master." The practice of mindfulness teaches us to harness our wandering mind so we can use it to serve our well-being. Scientific study over the past 40 years has shown time and time again how mindfulness can change the structure of the brain so we can become more receptive to positivity and joy. We can learn to face life's ups and downs in the knowledge we are strong enough to deal with whatever comes. Anyone can practice mindfulness, it doesn't require any fancy equipment or apparatus. Practicing mindfulness allows you to change your relationship with your thoughts and feelings, so you can have more control over your life. |
“The faculty of voluntarily bringing back a wandering attention, over and over again, is the very root of judgment, character, and will. No one is compos sui [master of himself] if he have it not. An education which should improve this faculty would be the education par excellence.” - William James

Claire Shannon MA
I am a counselor who has been working in private practice for over a decade. Through my work with clients, and in my own personal experience, I have learned just how important it is to have a regular mindfulness practice. Clients who practice this 8 week course alongside their therapy have seen vast improvements in their quality of life. I have found that I feel more balanced, energetic, optimistic, and peaceful since I began to practice meditation and mindfulness over 25 years ago. If you support your practice (i.e. show up and do it!), you will find that it, in turn, will support you, and provide a sense of strength and peace through the ups and downs of life. I hold a masters in clinical counselling, and a certification in the clinical use of Mindfulness. |
